STAGEY SPOOKS SERIES

Every September/October we release a 'Stagey Spooks Series' filled with Show History episodes about your favourite spooky musicals, Haunted Theatre stories, Broadway True Crime stories and more!

THE CURSE OF THE MARQUIS THEATRE

Do you believe Broadway's Marquis Theatre is cursed?

We dive deep into 'The Great Theatre Massacre of 1982', which brought down five theatres including the historic Morosco Theatre and the original Helen Hayes Theatre to make room for the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square.

Could a curse upon the location be the reason why many shows have been unsuccessful flops at the Marquis Theatre?

It's hard to ignore the eerie coincidence that many shows have struggled to find success at the Marquis Theatre. Some even say that the ghost of the Morosco Theatre haunts the location, seeking revenge for its demolition. Regardless of the reason, we discuss the flops and successful productions that once played at the Marquis including Cry-Baby, Nick and Nora, Evita, 9 to 5, Beetlejuice, Once Upon a One More Time and more!

HAUNTED THEATRE, THE GHOST OF THE 'PEARL STUDIOS SHI*TER' AND MORE!

On this episode, we discuss the stories behind two haunted theatres in North America: The Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto and the Nederlander Theatre in Chicago! We include the stories of our own personal hauntings inside the Royal Alexandra.

We also discuss potential hauntings and tragic events on Broadway based on old tales told on forums. Who knows... Maybe the 'Pearl Studios Shitter' is the real ghost of Broadway?

SHOW HISTORY: RIDE THE CYCLONE

After receiving many requests, we're finally covering the history behind the Canadian musical; Ride the Cyclone... Which is kind of like Cats, if Grizabella was decapitated and carried around a headless doll...

We discuss how social media plays a major role in bringing a newfound fanbase to this epic show, the creation behind Atomic Vaudeville and bringing the musical to off-Broadway!

SHOW HISTORY: THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA

He's there... The Phantom of the Opera!

Join us as we deep dive into the history behind one of the most beloved musicals of all-time, The Phantom of the Opera.

SHOW HISTORY: LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

In this episode, we discuss the creation behind Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's Little Shop of Horrors. You know, the horror comedy rock musical about a florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood and flesh.

THE MURDER OF BROADWAY STAR MARGARET LAWRENCE

The swanky 10-story Midtown apartment house at 51 St. didn’t exactly scream ‘murder’ when you strolled by. In fact, it was home to a glamorous celebrity couple of the stage and screen living the high life during the Roaring Twenties. However, on a warm June 9th in 1929 when shrieks were heard coming from the building, the NYPD didn’t expect to find a Broadway star laying dead in her bed.

This is the tragic murder of Margaret Lawrence.

THE MANY MUSICALS ABOUT MANSON

We're back with another Musical Theatre meets True Crime episode! Did you know there are musicals about Charles Manson and the Manson Family? No? Neither did we!

Join us as we discuss the life of Manson leading up to the events that took place in the Summer of 1969. We primarily focus on Stefan Pucher's Charles Manson: Summer of Hate Das Musical and the off-off-Broadway production of Manson: The Musical.

SHOW HISTORY: BONNIE & CLYDE

A musical about America's most infamous outlaws, a composer known for a string of Broadway flops, investors pulling their money out of the production... What could possibly go wrong?

In this Show History episode, we discuss the real-life history behind the robbery duo who inspired Wildhorn's Bonnie & Clyde: The Musical and the road that led to shooting their shot on Broadway.

SHOW HISTORY: R&H'S CINDERELLA

Happy almost Fall, y'all! It’s the start of our Stagey Spooks Series… May your apple pie scented candles be lit and your cup always filled with pumpkin spice. In fact, we’re going to chat all about everyone’s favourite Pumpkin Queen… Cinderella!

Our primary focus in this episode will be Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, in particular, we’ll focus on the 2013 Beane Broadway production. But don’t you worry, we’ll also cover the incredible Brandy version as well as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella.

SHOW HISTORY: DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES

Join us as we sink our teeth into the history behind yet another spooky musical: Dance of the Vampires! Is there anything more terrifying than a very expensive flop? We think not!

This campy musical, based on the Roman Polanski film The Fearless Vampire Killers, follows Professor Abronsius and his bumbling assistant Alfred as they attempt to prove the existence of vampires in Transylvania. Alfred falls for innkeeper's daughter Sarah, unaware that she is being pursued by the mysterious Count von Krolock.

SHOW HISTORY: LIZZIE

Lizzie Borden took an axe, gave her mother forty whacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty-one...

On this Show History episode, we hang up our LaDuca shoes and take a stab at True Crime. Join us as we look into the real-life case of Lizzie Borden, who inspired the musical LIZZIE; an American mythology set to a blistering rock score with a sound owing less to Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber than to Bikini Kill, the Runaways, and Heart.
